What’s the difference between Academic IELTS and General Training IELTS?

What is the purpose of Academic IELTS and General Training IELTS?

• Academic IELTS

You may have assumed that the Academic IELTS is for (potential) university students applying for admission to universities and Programmes where English is the language of instruction. However, many professionals and job candidates may be required to provide scores for this version of the test.

Medical work is one example. If you wish to work as a medical professional in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, or Canada, you must take the Academic IELTS. This version of the test is for medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and hospital lab technicians.

In contrast to the general training format, the academic permits test takers to demonstrate some reading and writing abilities that are not always a part of English speakers' common communicative experience. These are to be unique from general-purpose reading and writing abilities. 

• IELTS General Training

For all other immigration and employment purposes, the general training format is used if you wish to enter Canada, the United States, Ireland, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, and so on. Individuals taking the IELTS to obtain permission to live in Australia near their grandchildren, for example, might find that the General Training IELTS meets their requirements.

However, the test is not just used for immigration purposes. Multinational firms may use General Training IELTS scores to measure their employees' English proficiency. In some situations, test takers can submit their score reports to acquire a job.

Two versions, four skills

The overall format of both versions of the test is the same. Regardless of whatever version you take, your English writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills will be examined independently. In reality, there are no differences between the listening and speaking phases. The IELTS academic or general test will cover the same topics and question types.

The other two sections follow the same format. Differences begin to appear, however, like the content and task types, which we move on to now.

IELTS Academic vs. IELTS General Training Content

University students and professionals must be able to read texts in professional and academic journals, textbooks, and relevant publications and media in English. As a result, the Academic IELTS tests comprehension abilities using texts taken directly from these types of sources. Similarly, this version's writing activities make use of sample themes that would be appropriate in academic and professional settings. English writing abilities will be tested to ensure they are enough for producing college-level essays.

Those enrolled in General Training IELTS, on the other hand, will encounter language similar to that found in advertising, guidebooks, publications, announcements, or what employees would face in employee manuals. The written English of test takers will be assessed through typical assignments such as letter writing and basic essay writing.

Which is simpler: Academic IELTS or General Training IELTS?

Considering two similar English skill examinations, such as the IELTS academic or general test, it's difficult to identify which is easier. After all, various students find different things simpler or more difficult. "Your mileage may vary," as the saying goes in English.

That being said, the answer to the above question is... The General Training IELTS is most likely less difficult than the Academic IELTS. Almost every IELTS student I've spoken to believes it is less difficult. Summarizing a complicated graph or table is simpler than writing a brief letter! The composers of the test appear to agree. According to the IELTS, achieving 30 out of 40 in general training reading is as difficult as getting 23 out of 40 in academic reading. As a result, both 30/40 general training and 23/40 academics are band 6.

However, don't expect IELTS Listening or Speaking to be any simpler in general training. These two sections have the same format and difficulty level regardless of whether you are taking the IELTS academic or general exam.

Does the fact that General Training IELTS is simpler suggest that you should take it over Academic IELTS? Not at all. Finally, these tests are 70% similar, and you won't be able to choose which format you take.
